There are five main prayers that Muslims perform each day. These prayers are a fundamental part of a Muslim’s daily routine. I’ll walk you through each of them, and also talk about the importance of sunrise and sunset in Islam.

1. Fajr (The Dawn Prayer):

   • When: Fajr time starts at the break of dawn and ends just before sunrise. It’s the time when you can faintly see a line of light along the horizon but the sun itself hasn’t come up.
   • Imsak: This is the time when Muslims start their fast during the month of Ramadan. It’s just a few minutes before the Fajr time begins. Essentially, ‚imsak‘ means ‘to refrain’, and it’s the time when you should stop eating and drinking to start your fast.
   • Importance: Fajr prayer is considered to be very special. It’s like starting your day with remembrance and gratitude towards the creator. It helps to set a positive and balanced tone for the rest of the day.

2. Dhuhr (The Noon Prayer):

   • When: Dhuhr time begins right after the sun passes its zenith (the highest point in the sky), and lasts until Asr (the afternoon prayer).
   • Importance: Dhuhr prayer is an opportunity to take a break in the middle of the day to remember and be grateful. It’s like a reminder among the hustle and bustle of daily life that spiritual needs are as important as our worldly affairs.

3. Asr (The Afternoon Prayer):

   • When: Asr starts in the late afternoon. There are two opinions regarding its start time. Some scholars say it’s when the shadow of an object is the same length as the object, while others say it’s when the shadow is twice the object’s length. It lasts until just before sunset.
   • Importance: Asr prayer is like a daily reflection in the late afternoon. It’s an opportunity to refocus and remember what’s truly important.

4. Maghrib (The Evening Prayer):

   • When: Maghrib time starts immediately after sunset.
   • Importance: Maghrib prayer is important as it marks the end of the day. It’s a time to show gratitude for the day’s blessings and seek forgiveness for any shortcomings. In Ramadan, it’s also the time to break the fast, known as Iftar.

5. Isha (The Night Prayer):

   • When: Isha time begins after the twilight has disappeared and continues until before the Fajr prayer.
   • Importance: Isha prayer helps to conclude the day with a final reflection. It’s a way to wind down and make peace before going to sleep.

• Sunset: Similar to sunrise, sunset is also seen as a spiritual time in Islam. It marks the end of the day, a time to reflect on one’s actions, to be thankful for the good deeds, and ask for forgiveness for any wrongs.
